Dakta Okom helped restore sight for countless people. In my own family, my late dad was his client. And so was my mom and several relatives. But sight is more than the ability to see. It is hope. It is dignity. It is vision for the future.

What kept driving this remarkable journey? What sustained his resolve through challenges, sacrifice, and years of service? Why did he keep pushing when the work was hard and the odds were high?

Come and discover the story behind the mission, the man, and the moments that shaped a life of purpose. Join us for the launch of Dakta Okom’s book and be inspired by a story that restores more than sight.

My uncle, Mateyo, my mother’s brother, lost his sight about 35 years ago. He was in his fifties then, the head of the clan, and many people depended on his guidance. Losing his sight was not only a personal tragedy; it meant a loss of direction for an entire community that relied on his vision.

Those were difficult times. When the message reached my parents that my uncle could no longer see, only a few years had passed since his condition began, and they had no money to act immediately. Still, they cared deeply and did not give up.

One day, my father arranged for my uncle to be brought to see Darka Okom. By then, seven years had passed. He was examined and received professional care from Darka Okom, including a pair of glasses that he has used ever since.

Today, my uncle is about 90 years old, and he still uses those glasses. His sight was restored, and with it, his dignity and independence.

Imagine what his life would have been like if his sight had not been restored.

Thank you, Darka Okom.

This book has truly inspired me in a special way. Its message reminded me never to lose hope, no matter how tough life may seem. The words are uplifting, practical, and deeply touching, giving me the strength to face challenges with faith and courage. I am grateful for the wisdom in these pages—it is more than just a book, it is a source of hope and encouragement.

“He urged us not to run away because we have eyes yest the people who need our help cannot run because their eyes cannot help them to run to safety and we obliged” This statement is so touching that we, Africans have saints amongst us. It is not a mere word from just a human, but a divine inspiration.

*Tribute to Dacta Okom*

It is with great pride and deep admiration that we celebrate Dacta Okom, who has been deservedly honored with the Diamond Jubilee Award by *H.E. the President of the Republic of Uganda* during the Liberation Day celebrations held at Kololo Independence Ground on 26/01/2026

This national recognition stands as a powerful testimony to Dacta Okom’s pioneering service and commitment to community transformation. As the first-ever eye specialist in East Acholi, Dacta Okom broke new ground in advancing eye health services in a region that had long faced limited access to specialized medical care.

Through strategic lobbying from Lion Aid Norway by Dacta Okom, the first Eye Department at Kitgum General Hospital was established, restoring sight, dignity, and hope to thousands of patients across Northern Uganda.

Beyond healthcare, Dacta Okom’s impact extends into the education sector. Through persistent advocacy and lobbying, he played a key role in the construction of Balakwa Primary School in Lagoro Sub-county, enabling children in the community to access education in a safe and supportive learning environment. This contribution reflects a holistic vision of development, one that recognizes health and education as foundational pillars for sustainable progress.

In 2007 when Northern Uganda was recovering from the war that lasted for decades of the Lord Resistance Army led by Joseph Kony, I started a vocational Driving School called God’s Will Driving School in KITGUM, Dacta Okom being the only eye specialist, passed out over 300 drivers trained from GWDS and are now experienced drivers deployed all over Uganda and beyond, a great man of the Land, Dacta Okom

The Diamond Jubilee Award is not only a recognition of past achievements, but also a celebration of a life dedicated to service, leadership, and nation-building.

Dacta Okom’s legacy will continue to inspire current and future generations of professionals committed to serving humanity with excellence and compassion.

Congratulations to Dacta Okom on this well-deserved honor. Your service has left an indelible mark on East Acholi and on Uganda as a whole.
